Walk about Ware booklet
The Ware Society have produced an excellent guidebook that takes the reader on a route through Ware pointing out the historic and interesting features of the town. If you would like an alternative to the stroll by the river, why not buy one, they're only £2.50 and available from Ware Museum, the Grotto and the secretary of the Ware Society. Below is the introduction to the guide and a couple of the excellent line drawings. The guide comes with a labelled map.
The first guide for a Walk about Ware was a small leaflet produced for the Ware Society in 1981 with text by Peter Dawson and Val Doughty who also drew the illustrations.
By 1995 it was felt that a new and more comprehensive guide was required and the Society published the first edition of A Walk about Ware Guide with text by John Fletcher and David Perman, who also did
the original map, now revised. Unless shown otherwise, drawings are by Ron Kenway, a well-known Ware artist, now living in Somerset. Jim Haley, whose illustrations often appear in the Ware Society Newsletter, drew those on page 21 & the back cover.
There have been many changes in the town over the past five years since the publication of the 1995 Guide and as it was out of print the Ware Society published a revised edition. Our thanks are due to the various members of the Society who have ‘walked the Guide’, identified changes and suggested amendments.
